Modern ES6 concise function syntax

Arrow functions are a modern, concise way to write functions introduced in ES6 (ES2015). With their shorter syntax and unique behavior with this, they've become incredibly popular in modern JavaScript. They're perfect for callbacks, array methods, and simple operations. Let's master this essential modern JavaScript feature!

What Are Arrow Functions?

Arrow functions provide a shorter syntax for writing function expressions using the => (fat arrow) symbol.

Basic Syntax

// Traditional function expression
const add = function(a, b) {
  return a + b;
};

// Arrow function (equivalent)
const add = (a, b) => {
  return a + b;
};

// Arrow function with implicit return (even shorter!)
const add = (a, b) => a + b;

Why "arrow" function?

The name comes from the => symbol that looks like an arrow. It's also called "fat arrow" to distinguish it from the single arrow -> used in some other languages.

Arrow Function Syntax Variations

No Parameters

// Arrow function - must keep empty parentheses

Implicit Return

One of the most useful features of arrow functions is implicit return — when you omit curly braces, the expression is automatically returned.

Returning Objects with Implicit Return

Arrow Functions and 'this'
