Understanding the first line of every HTML document

The DOCTYPE declaration is always the very first line of an HTML document. It may look simple, but this single line plays a crucial role in how browsers interpret and display your web pages. Let's understand what it is, why it matters, and how to use it correctly.

What is DOCTYPE?

DOCTYPE stands for "Document Type Declaration." It's an instruction to the web browser that tells it which version of HTML the page is written in. This helps the browser render the page correctly.

These complicated declarations included references to DTDs (Document Type Definitions) hosted on external servers. HTML5 simplified everything with its short, memorable declaration.

If you see these long DOCTYPE declarations in old code, you can safely replace them with <!DOCTYPE html>. The HTML5 DOCTYPE is backward compatible and works for all modern browsers.

The Evolution of DOCTYPE
